Aromatic Therapies Skill Set (former HLTSS00046)

AROMATIC MEDICINE WITH RON GUBA (delivered over a 4 day workshop).

The Aromatic Therapies Skill Set provides competence in Aromatic Medicine. Practitioners at this level are self-employed as independent practitioners and have the ability to prescribe essential oils for internal use. Practitioners at this level may be involved in undertaking research activities.

It covers the provision of aromatic medicine to clients with specific needs such as palliative, aged and women and children. An Aromatherapist at this level operates within legislative and regulatory requirements and may work in the following environments:

• • A massage clinic
  • Aged care facility
  • Health service
  • Spa facility
  • Palliative care facility or hospital

The key clients for this qualification are:

• • Current holders of the Diploma of Aromatherapy
  • Current holders of the Diploma of Clinical Aromatherapy

An aromatherapist at this level will have an in-depth knowledge of an extensive range of essential oils and application methods. They will have the ability to prescribe for absorption by internal interfaces.

• Essential oil characteristics
• French Approach to use of herbs & essential oils
• Terrain Support
• Discuss Naturopathic principals as relevant to Aromatic Medicine
• Concept of Terrain Support with essential oils
• Discuss whole system models:
  • Traditional Greek Medicine System
  • The Hippocratic temperaments
  • Other traditional systems
  • Neuroendocrine approach
  • Osmobiosis (Dr Daniel Penoel)
• Aromatic Chemistry – discussion of the various chemical families found in essential oils; characteristics, therapeutic benefits, pharmacokinetics, safety considerations and essential oil examples.
• Discuss and demonstrate:
  • Aromatic Medicine application methods + preparations
  • Ingestible preparations
  • Disper
  • Capsules
  • Tablets & Lozenges
  • Other methods: use of vegetable oils, honey, Vitamin C tablets and sprays
• Formulating basics: working with weights and measures to prepare accurate Aromatic Medicine remedies.
  • Rectal Suppositories
  • Vaginal Application
  • Other methods of application: o Eyes, ears, nose and throat o Formulation & dosages, all considerations of application methods.
• Q & A, review of weight calculation for preparing capsules; use of vegetable oil and various powders for capsules.
• Discuss and demonstrate: Aromatic Medicine application methods, preparations & safe use of:
  • Eye treatments & formulation guidelines
  • Nasal treatments & formulation guidelines
  • Oral & throat treatments & formulation guidelines
  • Vaginal treatments & formulation guidelines for:
  • Vaginal pessaries
  • Use of tampons
  • Water-based douche preparations
  • Rectal treatments & formulation guidelines for:
  • Suppositories
  • Mini’ oil enemas
• Q & A; review regarding the days topics
• Demonstration and discussion of the aromatic perfusion technique.

  • Discussion of safety issues and contraindications for use. o
• Discuss and demonstrate: Aromatic Medicine application methods, preparations & safe use of:
  • Inhalation therapy
• Discussion & preparation of essential oil formulae for common disorders
• Discussion of essential oil safety:
  • Potential drug interactions when using essential oil therapy
  • Potential contraindications with the use of essential oil therapy in various physical disorders
• Formulation practice: Discussion of case studies in student groups

About Ron Guba 

Ron Guba is Australia’s leading proponent of aromatic medicine, having studied and practiced since the early 1980s. Completing his diploma in Phytotherapy and Aromatic Medicine in 1988 in France, Ron began Essential Therapeutics, a company devoted to providing therapeutic-grade essential oils to health practitioners.

Ron founded the Centre for Aromatic Medicine in 1989, to provide education and training in the practice of aromatic medicine and aromatherapy. Ron was a founding member and past chairman of the International Federation of Aromatherapists (Australia) and a founding member and past chairman of the Australian Aromatic Medicine Association. He writes and lectures extensively throughout Australia and overseas.
